Scrapple lover, Steph, sent me this scrapple story about the first time she was wowed by our favorite breakfast meat. Not surprisingly, it happened late one night while drunk in a diner. Oh, if I had a nickel for every time I've heard that one...
I ended up trying scrapple in a completely accidental way! A drunken diner trip, and a drunken order by my (now ex) husband started my fateful love affair with scrapple!
My husband grew up in Pennsylvania. I'm from Long Island. There is basically no such thing where I'm from - never even heard of it!
So, after drinking with friends, we went to a local, mom and pop type of diner in PA. I ordered a normal omelette and some sausage. Hubby was so drunk that he decided he liked the word "scrapple" and ordered a side with his meal. Once he got it, and his uncle told him what was in it, he got green and handed it to me, staying that I was known to try strange stuff. So, I tried a piece and found that I loved it. It was crisp on the outside, hot and delicious on the inside. It was amazing alone, with syrup or with ketchup!! And I have loved it ever since.
I'm now living in NC and I buy it whenever I can!
Steph encourages others not to miss out like her (ex) husband did: "I'd tell people who have never tried scrapple to eat it first, then read the ingredients!!" Wise words for the weak of stomach.
